What it is

Text to speech charged per character sent, with an allowance that starts again each month. Standard and WaveNet voices give four million characters a month before anything is charged; the newer voices give one million. There is no plan and no monthly fee, but billing must be enabled on the project first.

Our observations

  • The free allowance returns every month rather than being a one-off trial, so a small steady use can stay at nothing indefinitely.
  • The choice of voice moves the price by a factor of forty: $4 per million characters for Standard against $160 for Studio.
  • Billing has to be enabled before the first call, and their page says you are charged automatically once you pass the free characters.
