What it is
Invoices, quotes, recurring billing, online payments and a client portal, free forever for up to five clients with no limit on how many invoices you send them. There is also a self-hosted edition at invoiceninja.org for running the whole thing on your own server. Paid plans start at $14 a month and mainly buy you more clients and more templates.

Our observations
- The cap is on clients, not on invoices — so a contractor with three long-standing customers can bill them weekly, for years, for nothing.
- Five clients is the tightest client limit in this category. Anyone with a long tail of small customers hits it in the first month.
- The only one of the three with a self-hosted edition, which is the escape hatch if you would rather own the data than the subscription.
